When I take my old film cameras to the wrecking yard , I won’t use them to shoot whole rolls on individual cars for the Junkyard Treasures series. When I found a complete, time-capsule Rambler Classic sedan in a Denver yard, though, I knew what had to be done: photograph it with the appropriate camera from the same era as the car. Imperial cameras were made by the Herbert George Company in Chicago, and the earlys Mark 27 shared features with most other point-and-shoot American cameras of its day.

It used roll film , which gets an image area about four times that of 35mm film, and had fixed focus, fixed shutter speed, and a choice of two lens apertures. So, a pretty big negative, exposed with a cheap plastic lens, with good-enough image quality: the camera counterpart of the very affordable Rambler. The Imperial Mark 27 isn’t at its best when shooting dark car interiors, but I think it captured the affordable luxury of the ’63 Rambler sedan’s controls.

The gallery above contains the rest of the Mark 27’s photographs of this car, and I’ve included a second gallery of soulless digital photographs, below. The top-of-the-line Ambassador got the cubic-inch version. The later AMC V8s— the , , , , and — were clean-sheet designs and not based on the V8 you see here. I’m pretty sure this car sat outdoors for at least 30 years before getting discarded, so the engine has a good chance of being a runner not that anyone would want to buy a grimy these days.

It meant that the car had a heater with adjustable temperature, which was considered extremely futuristic in the late s but less so in See those triangle-in-a-circle marks at and kHz? That’s where you tuned when the. AM radios cost serious money in , so the original purchaser of this car felt willing to make the investment necessary to listen to ‘s big hits in glorious mono.

Every ten years or so, the American market rediscovers the compact economy car. Our younger readers may therefore be surprised to know that the idea of a small, luxurious economy car goes back at least to this primordial American compact: the original Nash Rambler. This week, the story of the — Rambler and Rambler American. The Thomas B. Jeffrey Company of Chicago, Illinois built the first prototype Rambler automobile in Jeffrey was a former bicycle manufacturer who took a fancy to the idea of the automobile, still a radical idea in the Gay Nineties.

Jeffrey built bicycles under the Rambler trade name, but did not apply that name to a production automobile until By that time, the company had moved to a new headquarters in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Rambler automobile was neither particularly small nor very cheap. The early Rambler did feature two novelties that would later become commonplace: a front-mounted engine and a steering wheel rather than the more customary tiller.

The car sold reasonably well in a fledgling market. Thomas Jeffrey died in the spring of and his son Charles assumed the presidency of the company. Charles Jeffrey took the company public for the first time and grew its business significantly.

My wife drove too, somebody was always going someplace, and for years it never hardly cooled off. I used to raise it up in the back yard and spray the hell out of it the underside with used motor oil. Everybody would complain if they went to get in and got oil on themselves.

I put on standard brakes. I did most of the mechanical work. What I liked was that I could depend on the Rambler. Never had any trouble, she just seemed to go forever.

Produced by the Nash Motors division of Nash-Kelvinator Corporation for six years only, the Rambler was responsible for establishing a new segment in the automotive market. Widely considered to be the original modern American compact vehicle, the Nash Rambler was orginally going to be called the Nash Diplomat. Dodge had already reserved the Diplomat name for a two-door hardtop body style, so the Rambler name was resurrected instead.

Introduced during the model year, the Nash Rambler was the entry model for the low-price segment that had been dominated by models from Ford, Chevrolet, and Plymouth. Riding on a ‘ wheelbase, the new model was designed to be smaller in dimension, and lighter in weight than the other popular cars of the time. Nash was able to save on materials in its productions and owners would have better fuel economy by keeping the vehicle smaller.

Now a larger car riding on a two-inch 50 millimeter longer inch 2, mm wheelbase, the width was also increased by nearly four inches millimeters to enlarge interior passenger space and cargo capacity. The new design featured a smooth rounded appearance with sweeping rooflines, a “coke-bottle” body with a shorter rear deck, as well as greater glass area for increased visibility. The Rebel models were similar to the senior Ambassador in that they shared the same basic unit body platform aft of the cowl.

However, the Rebel’s front end saw an entirely new concept with a “venturi” grille motif in die cast metal while its rear end featured a simple design with inward-curved taillights. Rebels came in the base and deluxe models, with a high-line SST available only as a two-door hardtop. Starting with the models, American Motors offered the industry’s most comprehensive warranty up to that time: 2-years or 25, miles 40, km on the entire automobile, as well as 5-years or 50, miles 80, km on the engine and power train.

Offering traditional Rambler economy with six-cylinder engines and overdrive transmissions, the Rebel could also be turned “into a decent budget-priced muscle car” with the cu in 5. Site Search. Subscribe to RSS. View RSS feed. Veteran – Vintage – Pre War Cars – Post War Cars – Today.
